Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.
Diclofenac is a a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that treats pain and inflammation. It is a versatile medication available in a variety of formulations, including tablets, eye drops, suppositories and topical solutions.
In most places it's possible to buy diclofenac as a generic as well as under brand names, the most widely-recognized of which are probably Aclonac, Cataflam and Voltaren. Topical solutions are typically available over-the-counter but in most places a prescription is required to buy diclofenac in other forms, such as tablets.
Diclofenac is generally well-tolerated but does carry some risk of side effects, similar to those of other NSAIDs such as aspirin or ibuprofen. It should not be given to children under the age of 14 without explicit doctor instruction, and should not be used in the third trimester of pregnancy under any circumstances as it may cause complications during birth.
The Many Uses of Diclofenac
While diclofenac is effective at treating mild to moderate pain from nearly any cause, it is particularly useful at treating pain from inflammatory conditions. People most commonly buy diclofenac to manage pain and swelling from:
It is somewhat less commonly used to manage pain from menstrual cramps. Though the medication does have some fever-reducing properties, it is generally not a preferred treatment for fever.
In some cases diclofenac is used as an abortive treatment for migraines. Note, however, that for treating migraines a rapidly-absorbed powder formula is used; migraine sufferers should not buy diclofenac in other forms for this purpose as they will likely have little effect.
In the majority of cases diclofenac is used in tablet or topical solution forms. In addition to regular tablets, extended-release and delayed-release versions are also available. In most places a prescription is required to buy diclofenac tablets of any strength.
Topical solutions, such as Voltaren Emulgel, are applied directly to the swollen, painful area and are often preferred over tablets for sprains, strains and osteoarthritis. In addition to providing pain relief without taking pills, topical solutions are generally less expensive than tablets and do not require a prescription. The risk of side effects is also somewhat reduced, though not eliminated, when using topical ointments.
Whether treating acute injuries or chronic inflammatory conditions treatment is similar; tablets are typically taken 2 to 3 times per day, while topical creams are applied 3 to 4 times per day. In all cases using the least amount of medication necessary for the shortest length of time possible is desirable; if treatment continues for more than 14 consecutive days regular doctor checkups are advisable to screen for developing adverse effects.
Warnings & Side Effects
For the most part side effects associated with diclofenac are similar to any other NSAID. Unfortunately, given how widely-available some NSAIDs are, many people don't realize that these medications can produce some serious complications, especially if taken long term.
Most side effects are not dangerous, including:
Less common but more serious side effects include:
Though the above adverse reactions are rare, their risk of developing increases the longer the medication is taken; this is why regular doctor checkups are strongly encouraged if the medication is taken long term. Note that though the risk of the above side effects is somewhat reduced if using topical forms of diclofenac, it is not eliminated.
Some individuals are at greater risk of experiencing serious side effects even it using diclofenac short term. Check with a doctor before starting treatment if there is a history of:
The above conditions don't necessarily rule out diclofenac use, but patients need to be extra alert for warning signs of potential adverse effects.
